AN INVITATION KappAbel
is a competition in Mathematics for school classes in the Nordic countries (Norway
and Iceland: 9th grade - Denmark, Finland and Sweden: 8th grade). The pupils of
the participating classes the school year 2004/05 were born 1991. In
the Nordic countries the competition consists of two qualifying rounds taking
place in the classrooms. The teacher has to download the problems from the
internet (using a user’s name and a password given him/her from KappAbel), and
the answers must be registered the same way. On
the basis of these two qualifying rounds a number of classes qualify for the
National semi final (and eventually for the final). From each of these classes a
team consisting of 2 boys and 2 girls is invited to the town where the finals
take place. But
before the semi final these classes have to prepare a project work on a theme
given them by KappAbel. This school year the theme is “Mathematics and the
body”. The teams to take part in the final qualify through the points given
for this project work together with the result of the problem solving session in
the semi final. For
more information about the competition, go to http://www.kappabel.com/indexfiler/Regler-0304-Eng.html
and http://www.kappabel.com/indexfiler/Prosjektregler-0304-N.html
(the latter so far unfortunately in Norwegian only). However: The KappAbel
competition would be very happy if classes from other countries than just the
Nordic countries would like to take part in the competition. Therefore any class with
pupils of the actual age, regardless from what part of the world, is invited to
compete in what we’ll call an “International KappAbel Guests’ Class”.
For obvious reasons it is not possible to arrange a “National semi final” or
a final for these classes, but the best class after the two qualifying rounds
will be rewarded a prize of NOK 2.000,00 (about € 240). The prize will be
awarded if 10 classes or more (including classes from Norwegian schools abroad)
take part. Further: In each of the two
rounds all classes sending a paper copy of the internet registration of their
answers take part in the drawing of 5 prizes of NOK 2.000,00 each, regardless
how many points they have achieved. (The main reason that we ask for these paper
copies is that we want to avoid problems in those cases where it turns out that
a given answer because of technical errors has not been properly registered on
the internet and therefore seems to have been lost.) This year the first round will
take place in the time November 8th – 19th. The problems for the
qualifying rounds will be available in Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish,
Icelandic and English versions. For pupils using other languages the teacher
will have to download the problems as soon as they are available on the internet,
and then make his/her own translation into the preferred language. There should
be sufficient time for this work, as the problems are available 2 weeks before
the answers have to be registered. Interested? Then you should send a mail to
KappAbel (roald.buvig@kappabel.com)
asking for a user’s name and password. Please send your message from an e-mail
address that may easily be identified as an official teacher’s or school’s
e-mail address (we cannot send passwords etc. to addresses like for instance “st-peter121@hotmail.com”). The English version of the
problems given in the two qualifying rounds 2003/04 may be found here: Round
1 - Round
2 Any question about the competition, about practical measures or the terms for participation is welcome. Just send a mail to the address above. Diesen
